Abstract

This study aimed to examine the serum levels of important trace elements zinc, copper, chromium, magnesium and calcium in the PCOS. The results illustrate that the Cu also Cr limits were significant high (p < 0.001) in PCOS patients contrast with the healthy controls. In contrast, the results illustrate a significant decrease in the serum concentration of the Zn, Mg also Ca in these patients comparing with the healthy group. The exception is the Cr element, which was high in the group of PCOS patients despite taking nutritional supplements containing minerals and vitamins, this imbalance in Cr concentration leads to an imbalance in the levels of hormones affecting the events of this disease, in addition to an imbalance between antioxidants and free radicals, which leads to increased oxidation states and the consequent negative symptoms for PCOS patients. The Pearson correlation showed inverse significant correlation between Mg and Ca at r = 0.525, p <0.001, and direct positive significant correlations between Zn with Cu at r = - 0.561, p<0.001 which confirm the strong correlation between these element levels and the possible relationship with PCOS, also may have importance as a marker or indicator in PCOS patients.

The analysis of the ROC curve revealed valuable correlations for the trace elements included in this study with PCOS. AUC values point to an excellent highly predictive function of chromium and copper of the incidence as well as growth of PCOS. Chromium ROC results show (AUC= 0.993), sensitivity of 98.3% and a specificity of 96.7% with Cut-off value 0.185 µg/dl while for the copper; (AUC= 0.906), sensitivity of 90.0% and a specificity of 86.7% with Cut-off value 1.37 µg/ml, while Zn, Mg and Ca gives fail and bad results.
